Alison Andrews-Paul, a graduate student-athlete at Simon Fraser in British Columbia, Canada, and the reigning NCAA Division 2 indoor 800-meter champion and outdoor 800 division record holder at 2:01.43, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the 800 and 4x400 relay at the Division 2 outdoor final May 26-28 at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Andrews-Paul, who has dual citizenship in New Zealand and Canada, explains how meaningful it is to qualify for all three NCAA championship events in her final year and how significant it is to be making her debut at the Division 2 outdoor finals. She reflects on only being able to run time trials and local meets last season because of the restrictions enforced during the pandemic and not being able to cross the Canadian border to race in the United States, with her fastest 800 time before this year being 2:06.32 from the World Under-20 Championships in Poland in 2016. Andrews-Paul reminisces about her first meeting with Aaliyah Miller at the global meet in Bydgoszcz and how both individuals went on to compete for Baylor. She analyzes how both of them have dealt with injury setbacks during their careers, but emphasizes the resilience and perseverance both athletes have demonstrated to become NCAA champions, with Miller winning the Division 1 indoor 800 title last year in Arkansas and boasting a personal-best 2:00.69. Andrews-Paul revisits capturing her first NCAA title at the indoor championship meet March 12 at Pittsburg State in Kansas, running 2:04.04 for the No. 3 performance in Division 2 indoor history. She expresses gratitude for the opportunity to train and race with Simon Fraser graduate Addy Townsend and how instrumental her presence was in the race when Andrews-Paul achieved the Division 2 outdoor record April 14 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, with Townsend running 2:01.24. Andrews-Paul also shares how impactful Simon Fraser coach Brit Townsend has been in her development and improvement, along with assistant coach Jessica Smith and alumni Lindsey Butterworth, the last Simon Fraser female athlete to sweep the NCAA Division 2 indoor and outdoor 800 titles in 2015. She shares her desire to race June 22-26 at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in British Columbia, along with completing her thesis paper to finish her degree during the summer and training with Townsend as a post-collegiate athlete.
