Addy Townsend, representing Tracksmith and Team Total Sports along with being an All-American at NCAA Division 2 Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her selection to compete in the 800 meters for Canada at the World Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Townsend, 24, is scheduled to race July 21 in the prelims, joining training partner and fellow Simon Fraser alumni Lindsey Butterworth, along with Madeleine Kelly. It marks the first time in Canadian history that three female athletes will be competing in the 800 at the World Championships. Townsend shares why the news made Canada Day so meaningful this year, especially after recovering from a recent illness, which resulted in a fourth-place finish June 25 at the Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, British Columbia. She revisits her personal-best 2:01.24 in the 800 on April 14 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University in California, and how significant that performance was in her overall selection, in addition to how a change of schedule allowed her to shift from competing at the 62nd Mt. SAC Relays Presented by Nike to racing at Bryan Clay and being part of a group of five sub-2:02 athletes in the field. Townsend analyzes how reassuring it was to clock 2:01.70 and prevail against Kelly, finishing third overall at the USATF Distance Classic on May 19 at Mt. SAC, a race that also included U.S. 1,500-meter champion Sinclaire Johnson. She reflects on running 2:03.20 in June 2021 in Guelph and how much she has developed in the past year and how special it will be to compete again at Hayward Field after both racing and pacing competitions there last season. She explains how profound it is to follow her mother Brit (McRoberts) Townsend, who represented Canada in the 1,500 at the 1983 World Championships in Finland, along with being an Olympian and four-time national champion. Townsend expresses gratitude for the support she has received from her family and fellow athletes, along with collaborating with Nick Willis and Tracksmith, as well as Team Total Sports. She also shares how meaningful it has been for Canadian athletes to compete at home June 14 at Harry Jerome and July 3 at the Edmonton Pre World Championships Invitational.
